Top Flicks of 2011 (so far anyways)

2011 has been a pretty great year for flicks so far. We've had new properties emerge, prequels, etc that SHOULD have failed/sucked but didn't, along with some properties that should have been good but sucked.  Many people have asked me for recommendations so I figured I would get around and post up my personal choices for Top Flicks of 2011 (so far anyways) in no particular order.

Insidious

Darren Bousman's throwback to classic haunted house movies. Super original concept, creepy, scary, unbelievable cinematography.  Easily the best haunted house/ghost story I have seen in recent memory, featuring some of the most frightening images seen in a horror flick.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

A prequel to one of my favorite series' of all time featuring a ton of CGI and starring James Franco. Should suck right? WRONG! Thought-provoking, amazing CGI, a well thought out screenplaying, and incredible action had me glued. Only bad thing is James Franco, but thats a personal issue.  Very well done.

I Saw the Devil

If you're on of those people that refuses to watch foreign flicks, you're an idiot.  Missing out on I Saw the Devil is on of the biggest mistakes a movie fan could do.  Gory as hell with incredible action and acting, we see the hero become the villain and the villain become the victim. Not only one of the best flicks of 2011, but one of the best Asian flicks of all time.

Hobo With a Shotgun

Dude, this isn't just a movie, this is an experience! Featuring the incredibly rough and raw acting of Rutger Hauer and tons of ridiculous cheese. This is one of those rare balls to the walls flicks that rarely gets released.  Get some friends over and drink some beers to heighten the experience.

Several other flicks came out that were "OK" and some just plain sucked.  Scream 4 was ok, and I don't know if I am saying that for pure nostalgia or quality. The Ward never quite lived up to my expectations and I thought Super 8 pretty much sucked.  We've still got about 4 months left of 2011 and there are quite a few movies on the horizon that look good. Flicks such as Apollo 18, Fright Night 3D, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, Bereavement, and Chromeskull: Laid to Rest II all look pretty good. Here's hoping to a good 2nd half of 2011!
